  • Holland's Barriers to The Sea

The Delta Works in the Netherlands (Holland) is the largest flood protection project in the world. This project consists of a number of surge barriers, for examples: 1- The Oosterscheldekering is the largest of the 13 ambitious Delta Works series of dams and storm surge barriers and it is the largest surge barrier in the world, 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) long. The dam is based on 65 concrete pillars with 62 steel doors, each 42 metres wide. It is designed to protect the Netherlands from flooding from the North Sea. 2- The Maeslantkering is a storm barrier with two movable arms; when the arms are open the waterway remains an important shipping route however when the arms close a protective storm barrier is formed for the city of Rotterdam. Closing the arms of the barrier is a completely auto...

  • Petroleum engineering (MSc), DTU

Global energy consumption is growing rapidly as the world is developing. However, oil and gas resources will be much less accessible in future, and far more advanced technology will be required to extract them. This means that the future hydrocarbon production will deal with unconventional resources, such as shales, gas hydrates and tar sands; it will take place in deep waters, or it will occur in “difficult” regions such as the Arctic region. The petroleum industry therefore needs more highly qualified engineers specializing in a wide range of areas. DTU offers a new interdisciplinary study programme focusing on ensuring that the students acquire broad, general engineering skills. The programme provides the students with a solid grounding in mathematics, physics, and chemistry, and simultaneously teaches them to work across disciplines and apply them to solve actual problems. Find additional information at: http://www.dtu.dk/english/education/bachelor--beng-and-bsc-/general-engineering The programme is taught in English and is therefore intended for students from both Denmark and the rest of the world—approx. half of the students and lecturers have an international background. This way, you become a part of an international study environment, which prepares you for a career in the global labour market. In the first semester, students participate in a number of compulsory courses, where they are introduced to mathematics, physics, and chemistry. In the second and third semesters, the students are introduced to two of the programme’s four focus areas—Living Systems, Cyber Systems, Cyber Materials, and Future Energy—and in the following semesters, they will specialize in one of these areas. In the fifth semester, students have the opportunity to spend a semester at a university abroad, work on a project in collaboration with a company, or specialize further at DTU. In the sixth semester, the programme is concluded with a BSc project. Throughout the entire programme, students work on design-build projects, which are practice-oriented, interdisciplinary group projects. The students work together on proposing an engineering solution to a specific problem from the real world. This way, the students learn to take the engineering approach to solving problems, and to communicate and work together as a group on finding the best solutions in real-life settings.
